WINE NOTES

Castello di Monastero

Thirty years ago, a successful industrialist decided to devote himself to his great passion: wine-growing. And so began a fascinating and complex story that culminated in the acquisition and valorization of three very important estates in Tuscany.
The purchase and restoration of an historic monastery (dating from 1000) at Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the heart of the Siena Chianti Classico area, saw the creation of a prestigious agricultural and residential complex, the present-day Castello di Monastero.
Montalcino, the homeland of one of the most famous wines in the world, saw the acquisition and renovation of the Coldisole estate joined. Lastly, the foundation of Poggio alle Sughere in the Tuscan Maremma area.
Attention focuses on territory and grapes: the wines must be an expression of these two components and highlight there best aspects through attentive management of the vineyards, harvest, vinification and ageing.

At Grand Cru we have the privilege of carrying 6 of their wines. These wines have arrive and are flying out the door FAST.

There line up of wines include:

Coldisole Rosso Montelcino

Montelcino

Brunello di Montalcino is part of the history of great Italian red wines and has been famous since the late-1800s. One of the great red wines of Tuscany, it is the only one - in terms of tradition and regulations - made exclusively with Sangiovese grapes. The Coldisole estate in Montalcino focuses on careful selection of grape bunches during the harvest, followed by vinification leaving the must on the skins for twelve–fourteen days. Refinement takes place in small oak barrels for three years and then in the bottle for a further twelve months. The distinctive and imposing bouquet is matched by a dry, warm, well-balanced and persistent taste. This wine can be aged for twenty–thirty years and is an ideal accompaniment for rich dishes such as roast or braised beef and game, and mature cheese.

Castello Monastero Chianti Superiore

Chianti

The Castelnuovo Berardenga vineyards exclusively produce Chianti. Yield is strictly limited to 45 hectolitres/hectare. This means that Castello di Monastero produce a Chianti Superiore ensuring two characteristics: a fresh and agreeable wine accompanied by a fine body. It is made from 85% Sangiovese grapes with 15% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and is refined for seven months in small oak barrels. This Chianti Superiore is an all-meal wine: its dry bouquet has hints of vanilla, with a persistent and harmonious taste.

Castello Monastero Sangiovese

sangiovese

The most famous and most noble Tuscan grape is Sangiovese - used to make all the most important wines, either "pure" or in combination with other grape varieties. The Castello di Monastero vineyards at Castelnuovo Berardenga produce Sangiovese grapes vinified "pure" - leaving the must on the skins for ten–twelve days and refining the wine for several months in small oak barrels. This wine has a rather intense ruby red colour and an impressive bouquet with hints of ripe cherries. The warm, dry and well-balanced taste means that this wine is an ideal accompaniment for various meat, fish, pasta and rice dishes.

Poggio alle Sughere Morellino di Scansano

Montelcino

The Poggio alle Sughere estate in Magliano in Toscana - in the heart of the Maremma zone - produces Morellino di Scansano with a blend of Sangiovese (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). This warm environment with perfect rainfall means that Morellino di Scansano is a very pleasant and agreeable, harmonious and elegant wine, with impressive and persistent perfumes accompanied by hints of violets, raspberries and pomegranate. This wine is refined for eight months in small barrels and then four months in the bottle. Thanks to these characteristics, this wine is an ideal accompaniment for cured meats, pasta and rice, grilled beef and cheese. As enjoyable in Winter as on warm Summer evenings.

Castello Monastero Infinito Super Tuscan

Blueeyed Shiraz

Infinito is the name chosen to highlight the complexity and impressive structure of this wine made at Castelnuovo Berardenga. Infinito is made from a blend of grape varieties - Sangiovese (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%). The wine is refined in small oak barrels for about 18 months and then for a further 12 months in the bottle. Infinito has a full, distinctive bouquet with a marked fragrance of dark wild fruit and liquorice, as well as hints of ripe cherries, spices and vanilla. It has a warm, full, generous, austere and velvety taste, with an aristocratic aftertaste of roasted almonds which is very persistent.
